Elise Co Designs Jason Wu NYFW Runway Sculpture

Mary and David Martin/MADWORKSHOP recently sponsored the design of a centerpiece sculpture for this season’s Jason Wu Collection runway show, held in the public square at Manhattan’s Hudson Yards. The sculpture was a bespoke design by MADWORKSHOP fellow Elise Co, designer and technologist at Aeolab and ArtCenter College of Design, in collaboration with artist Ben Borden.

Co’s design was inspired by the theme ‘INK,’ celebrating Wu’s collaboration with Tong Yang-Tze, a Chinese artist renowned for her calligraphy at monumental scale.

Exploring the possibilities for transformation through modularity, a graphical silhouette of dispersing ink was sampled, re-composed, and transformed into a 21-foot-high structure titled “INK 01 / 6A 6B 6C.” Made from precision-cut sheet steel and mounted within a scaffolding frame, models were able to move around and through it.

The installation highlighted the interplay between the digital, architectural, and art worlds.
