Mary and David Martin/MADWORKSHOP sponsored the design of a centerpiece sculpture for the Jason Wu Collection’s spring 2025 runway show, held in the public square at Manhattan’s Hudson Yards during New York Fashion Week. The sculpture was a bespoke design by MADWORKSHOP affiliated fellow Elise Co, designer and technologist at Aeolab and ArtCenter College of Design, in collaboration with artist Ben Borden.
Co’s design was inspired by the theme ‘INK’, celebrating Wu’s collaboration with Tong Yang-Tze, a Taiwanese artist renowned for her calligraphy at monumental scale. (In 2024, Tong created two new works of Chinese calligraphy for display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s historic Great Hall. The Great Hall Commission represented her first major project in the United States.)
Exploring the possibilities for transformation through modularity, a graphical silhouette of dispersing ink was sampled, re-composed, and transformed into a 21-foot-high structure titled “INK 01 / 6A 6B 6C”. Made from precision-cut sheet steel and mounted within a scaffolding frame, models were able to move around and through it.
The installation highlighted the interplay between the digital, architectural, and art worlds.
