Arroyo Bridge Carbon Model and Section Exhibit in Venice, Italy

Designers:
R. Scott Mitchell and USC School of Architecture Students
Project Type:

Arroyo Bridge Carbon Model is a contextual scale model featured in the European Cultural Centre’s Architecture Biennale outdoor exhibition. The model was located prominently near the entrance to the 2023 Venice Biennale in the Marinaressa Gardens. Standing alongside Arroyo Bridge Section—which was first exhibited in 2022, disassembled and stored, and reassembled in 2023—the model was comprised of carbon fiber and aluminum to endure eight months of exposure to the elements.

Sponsored by Mary and David Martin/MADWORKSHOP, Arroyo Bridge Carbon Model was 3D-printed at 1:10 scale. It depicts a pedestrian bridge designed by undergraduate students of the USC School of Architecture in 2014. This “Bridge Studio” was sponsored by Mary and David Martin and led by Scott Mitchell, a professor at USC and Advisory Board Member of MADWORKSHOP. The goal of the studio was to explore new modes of robot-assisted fabrication, supported by Autodesk Technology Center in Boston.
