2022 AAR Affiliate Fellow
Project Type:

Marek Djordjevic explored intersections of architecture and mobility in Rome. He researched the city’s various modes of transportation, the concepts of its complex infrastructure, the richness of its architecture, and its unique environmental characteristics. He documented his gained impressions and insights through personal notes and photography.

Upon his return from Italy, Marek created a design project brief for a future class. It was envisioned as a trans-disciplinary studio between ArtCenter’s undergraduate and graduate Transportation and Environmental Design students. The involvement of David Martin of MADWORKSHOP during key milestone reviews, with additional support provided by an Italian vehicle manufacturer, would provide an enriching experience for the students, borne out of their instructor’s time in Rome.

“The MADWORKSHOP affiliated fellowship at the American Academy in Rome during the fall of 2022 was a transformative experience beyond any expectation. Nestled within the ancient city’s embrace, I found myself surrounded by a community of scholars and artists whose variety of perspectives and passions ignited my own creative thoughts. The Academy’s setting, steeped in history and overlooking the timeless beauty of Rome, provided an inspiring backdrop for deep intellectual exploration and personal growth. From lively discussions over daily meals together, exemplifying the concept of la bella tavolata—the joy of a good meal in good company—to solitary walks along cobblestone streets, every moment seemed to deepen my appreciation for the interconnectedness of art, history, and culture. The support of the Martins and the selection committee, along with the camaraderie of other fellows, enriched my experience immeasurably. Reflecting on Plato’s quote that ‘the object of education is to teach us to love what is beautiful,’ I found Rome, with its inexhaustible trove of art, layers of history, and vibrant sense of life, to embody this ethos profoundly. As I departed from this extraordinary chapter, I carried with me not only cherished memories, but also a renewed commitment to creativity and a profound gratitude for the opportunity to explore the eternal city, Roma, which truly leaves an indelible mark on the soul.”
