EMERGENCY ARCHITECTURE: Request for Proposals

MADWORKSHOP announces an open call for two design fellowships for 2017 addressing the theme of Emergency Architecture. In an era of increased environmental and political uncertainty, our responses as designers become ever more important. The foundation is currently soliciting proposals for innovative and life-saving design solutions in the areas of product and fashion design.

Proposals must tackle one of two topics: how to reimagine the emergency kit (earthquake / fire / flood / civil unrest) or how to develop a high performance garment for extreme weather or disaster situations.

Each fellow will receive a grant of $5,000 to prototype their idea with the support of the foundation and its board of directors.

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be 18 years of age or older and have completed high school (or equivalent)

• Be a US citizen

• Applicants may currently be enrolled in higher education or have been out of school for no more than 10 years

• Fluency in English, both speaking and writing.

Previous experience with fabrication and design encouraged but not required.

TO APPLY:

Please submit your proposal and CV as a PDF document (max file size 5 MB) to info@madworkshop.com with the subject line “MADWORKSHOP FELLOWSHIP 2017.”

All proposals must have concrete timelines for taking your idea from concept to reality on or before December 31st, 2017.

While we are open to fellows working remotely, ideal candidates will need to have some plans to be in Los Angeles for a period of time during the year to present their project and work on fabrication. East coast candidates will have the opportunity to work with our New York board members Carl Magnusson (Renowned Industrial Designer) and Barbara Heizer (Editor and Entrepreneur). Fellows based in California will have access to our fabrication workshop, foundation facilities, west coast board members including Karen Hofmann (Art Center), Frank Novak (Modernica), and Edie Cohen (Interior Design Magazine), founders David and Mary Martin, and director Sofia Borges.

Out of state fellows will receive two travel stipends to Los Angeles during the course of their fellowship to present their work to the foundation.

Applications must be received by 12pm PST on March 31st, 2017 to be considered.
